Is Your Site About Your Readers – or All About Yourself?

If you have a business website online, you want that website to make money for you – right? That’s natural.

You probably started your online business after reading how others are making great money online and working only four hours a week.

That may have given you visions of making thousands of dollars a month and a future life lounging on your terrace, sipping piña coladas, and watching your children playing in the yard with your dog.

You soon found out that four hours a week was unrealistic. You accepted that and floundered around a bit about what information to include on your website. In the end, you wrote about what you knew best – activities from your own life.

Be Realistic

Do your visitors leave your site feeling that they got just what they needed from you or do they click away with the impression that your site was all about you?

That’s what some website owners do. Their sites give them the chance to be the center of attention. They brag about the lifestyle they’re living or going to live, the great sports car they bought or plan to buy soon, the vacation they’re planning, and on and on.

Readers who have been visiting your site for some time might be interested in you and your daily activities, but new visitors won’t be. They want you to solve a problem for them – whether it’s how they can benefit from the coaching service you offer or how they can better use the product that they bought from you in the past or are currently thinking about buying from you.

How Do Your Readers Feel?

If you’re selling a product or a service, potential buyers don’t care that you bought a new BMW – unless you write about it in such a way as to encourage your visitors to be able to do the same.

Instead, you should be giving tips that your readers can use immediately. Provide solutions to problems that your visitors have. When you do that, your audience will grow larger and larger, with a corresponding increase in income.

What’s the Recipe?

  1. Create high-quality content that focuses on the reader. Always over deliver – give your readers more than they expect. Be consistent with this so that your readers get excited when they visit you to see what surprise you have for them.
  2. Post your reader-focused, top quality content on a regular basis. You don’t need to post every day or even every week. Once you decide how often you’ll be able to post regularly, maintain that frequency.
  3. Use both keywords and SEO in your content.
  4. Use images that are relevant and informative.
  5. Share your articles on the social media that your readers prefer.
  6. Include a way for readers to subscribe to your website.
  7. Email your readers or use social media to let them know whenever you post new articles on your site.
Just remember that your website should focus on your readers and their needs. If you do that, you’re on the right path.

  1. Hi Kate Benzin, I like this;
‘3. Use both key words and SEO in your content’
It creates a 2 in1effect as having a built in SEO campaign that are search engines friendly. I normally do that but will pay more attention now. Cheers. Lynette
