Long gone are the days where you could just hand in your CV and a recommendation to apply for a job.
The competition for the best jobs is fierce. Employers investigate future employees and headhunt talent online more thoroughly than ever before.
So if you are not visible online, you basically don’t exist at all!
That’s why you need a website, sooner rather than later. (Create one for FREE here)
Continue reading and learn how you can use a website to make yourself stand out from the crowd – online!
It’s time to show the world how hardworking, smart and dedicated you are! Make yourself visible to future employers, colleagues and clients.
People are searching for you online, so it’s crucial that you actually show up in those search results.
(Hint: It’s not your Facebook profile they’re after – It’s your personal website!)
Your personal website is your online CV and business card combined. You can use it to tell the world who you are and what you do. Showcase your previous work and upload photos of yourself.
First you need to create your own website (you can sign up for a FREE easy-to-edit website right here!)
People are curious, so be sure to make it easy for them to learn more about you. Include a link to your LinkedIn profile on your website, and remember to link back to your website from your LinkedIn profile as well.
Don’t keep your best secrets to yourself. Share them!
Make yourself an expert within your field and start blogging about what you’re best at. Write guides, tips or start a debate by questioning your industry.
Use a few hours a week to build up your online portfolio of knowledge (i.e. your blog!). It doesn’t have to be a ph.d. In philosophy every time. It can be something as simple as sharing a picture or a video you’ve seen on the web and commenting on it.
Share your posts with your network. LinkedIn is mandatory – Twitter, Google+ and Facebook are optional (but might be important to consider depending on your industry!).
Sharing is a great way to make yourself more visible to your connections and their connections. Update often, so you regularly appear in their news feed. People will start recognizing and remembering your name and face. Future employers or clients might come across your posts, or one of your connections might remember you next time he needs a person with your particular knowledge and skillset.
(Pssst…! You can use SimpleSite to create your own FREE website + blog. It’s easy and only takes 3 minutes. Click here to get started!)
A free website is better than no website at all, but if you really want to impress you should get your own domain.
It looks professional and it’s easier for people to remember. And what’s even more important: It makes you 10 times more likely to appear in the search engines.
Ideally your domain name should be your (full) name, artist name or business name, e.g. johnjohnson.com.
If it’s already taken you can try different variations of your name, e.g. with/without your middle name (johnleejohnson.com), adding your job title (doctorjohnjohnson.com) or adding dashes (john-johnson.com). You can also try a different top domain like .net, .org and .io.
BONUS: If you get your own domain you can also set up a custom email address with your own domain! Very professional and a great way for future employers and clients to get in touch with you!
Get your own domain by creating your a website here. Simply add your domain at the end of the sign-up process and you’re ready to go.
